The fourth-ranked Federal Way High School football team played in front of a huge crowd Thursday night and didn't disappoint.

The Eagles beat up the Emerald Ridge Jaguars at Puyallup's Sparks Stadium, 43-7, to move to 2-0 in the South Puget Sound League South Division. The game was televised on Root Sports Northwest's five-state region as part of the network's High School Football Game of the Week.

Federal Way got a pair of touchdown catches from Mike Tate and D'Londo Tucker and scoring runs from Chico McClatcher and quarterback Evan Elliot. Elliot also had three of the four touchdown passes for the Eagles. Kennan Curran had the other.

Things started out kind of slow for the powerful Eagles. Federal Way's first touchdown of the game didn't come until late in the first quarter on a 5-yard Tate reception. The Eagles grabbed a 14-0 lead on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Curran to Tucker early in the second quarter.

But Federal Way took real control of the game during a one minute span later in the quarter.

After Tucker ran through the middle of the Emerald Ridge for a 15-yard touchdown catch, the Jaguars fumbled the ensuing kickoff and it was recovered by the Eagles.

Two plays later McClatcher, a sophomore, pinballed into the endzone on an 8-yard run to give Federal Way a 28-0 lead heading into halftime.

Following the break, the Eagles got a 1-yard touchdown run from Elliot and a 20-yard pass to Tate to go up 41-0.

The final quarter and a half went by pretty quick. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association voted before the season to add a running clock in the second half of football games with a 40-point differential.

Emerald Ridge's only score of the game came later in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard run by Dalton Stanley against the Federal Way defensive subs.

It was the second week in a row the Eagles have forced the running clock. Federal Way led Rogers 41-0 during their opener before the Rams tallied a pair of late touchdowns to finalize the score at 41-14.

The SPSL title might be decided this week when the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles (2-0) visit Federal Way Memorial Stadium Thursday night. Graham-Kapowsin was picked as the second-place team during the preseason by the league's coaches and beat Post Falls from Idaho in their opener, 27-17. They also downed Curtis Friday, 28-12, in another key SPSL South battle. Curtis has won four of the last five SPSL South titles.
